The foundational text on principled negotiation, developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project. Roger Fisher and William Ury introduced a method that has become the default framework taught in law schools, business programs, and diplomatic training worldwide.
Why This One
“Getting to Yes” introduced the idea that negotiation does not have to be a zero-sum battle. Instead of each side staking out a position and making concessions, Fisher and Ury propose focusing on underlying interests. A position is what someone says they want. An interest is why they want it. When you shift from positions to interests, solutions emerge that neither side would have considered otherwise.
The book’s four principles are deceptively simple. Separate the people from the problem. Focus on interests, not positions. Invent options for mutual gain. Insist on using objective criteria. Together, they form a complete system for handling any negotiation without resorting to threats, tricks, or capitulation.
The concept of BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) is perhaps the book’s most lasting contribution to the field. Knowing your BATNA gives you a clear benchmark for when to walk away, and understanding the other side’s BATNA tells you how much leverage you actually have.
What to Expect
A concise 204-page book that reads quickly. The writing is clear and practical, with plenty of examples from international diplomacy, labor disputes, and everyday life. Originally published in 1981, the book has been updated twice (the current third edition dates from 2011) and remains remarkably relevant. If “Never Split the Difference” teaches you to negotiate with emotion and intuition, “Getting to Yes” gives you the structural framework underneath.
