No One Gets Out Alive is Nevill’s ruthless haunted-house novel, won the August Derleth Award, and was adapted into a Netflix film. It swaps forests and coastlines for a single dreadful building, and the confinement makes it one of his most nerve-shredding reads.

It is a strong alternative because it shows a different side of Nevill’s range while keeping his gift for suffocating atmosphere. The first half in particular is an exercise in pure, mounting helplessness. If the isolation of his other books appeals but you prefer a tighter, more contained setting, this is the one.
